The Subterranean Termite Characteristics

The Subterranean Termite Characteristics

The colonies can range anywhere from a few thousand to in rare cases millions of termites with both reproductive termites as well as soldier termites. The Subterranean Termite requires moister and since the wood by itself does not provide the moisture, the earth provides it for them. The subterranean termite is the most common species of termite here in the United States. Subterranean termites feed on wood, paper, cotton, and tree and shrub roots. They are also sometimes referred to as soil termites. They are dark brown or black with gray wings and if measured by the wings are 3/8" long, so they tend to be a lot smaller than the damp wood termite.

Worker termites usually develop into winged termites which, are the adult termites, though they have to first pass nymphal, which is what they call the intermediate stage of the termite growth. These termites are at the stage where they have wing buds. The worker termite matures within a 1 yr and lives somewhere between 3 and 5 years. They come into your home through tiny cracks in a foundation or slab, through cable or electrical entry points or if there is a soft spot where soil contacts the wood. They also create mud tunnels is an attractive entry point above ground is not found. They tunnels are also called shelter tubes.

The Subterranean termite uses there pincers when fighting their enemies. Whereas the Nasuties soldier termites (subterranean termites natural enemy) sprays a pungent chemical through a pointed nose system. Chemicals can be used in the home to repel the subterranean termite so they do not gain access to your home. Chemical treatments should be repeated every five years if they are to be effective. The subterranean are generally soil dwelling and feed on materials with cellulose in them such as paper or wood. They are good in the wild because they attack dead wood and stumps which decomposes them and turns them back into the earths soil for new growth.

The wings on the subterranean termite are longer than the termites body. The Heterotermes Tenuis (or subterranean termite) are the main pest control problem for the sugarcane fields in Brazil as well as the eucalyptus. Brazil uses entomopathogenic fungi, as there environmentally safe termite control, but it is not always effective and sometimes has to also be treated with various chemicals. They carry various studies out of Brazil on the effect the termite has and the behavior they have on entomopathogens.

The subterranean termites is one of the most interesting in the termite kingdom. He not only is the only one of the species that adapts to the dirt but also has colonies up to a million in number. They are avid workers who work around the clock. They are a very interesting species.
